As an excited child of long ago
I couldn't stand the wait
with fears that he would miss my house
or that he'd come too late

I waited patiently for Santa Claus
and finally fell asleep
with visions of those sugar plums
and presents in a heap

Now, I only feel contentment as I gaze out on the snow
No more the heady, frantic wait
~just relaxing with the candle's glow

I do not want the thrill of presents
piled high beneath the tree
Instead, I take pleasure in Christmas shows
I watch on my TV

I no longer join in carol singing
~just hum softly to myself
and watch the soft light shining
at the nativity on the shelf

The snow falls softly to the ground
~the drifting flakes serene
and with Christmas lights shining on my porch
there is no prettier scene

The Christmas tree in my gazebo
is a beautiful sight to see
and the cardinals settle for the night
in my pretty old birch tree.

It's as if the whole world is at peace
and God reigns in all His glory
~that the most wonderful story ever told
is the blessed Christmas story.

I have never been so contented
so convinced my life is fine
~and I'm determined to never lose
this childlike wonder of mine

And though the heady excitement may be gone
The believing is still there
but where I used to race my brother down the stairs
I view Christmas from my easy chair!
