He was her only child
with eyes of bluest blue
She loved him with undying love
and marveled as he grew

When he was two his tiny legs
would scurry like the wind
She taught him to play "hide and seek"
and she always let him win

When he was five, and learned to ride
his brand new shiny bike
She ran right along beside him
~~He was such a little tyke

When he was ten, he said to her
"Mom, I want to be a soldier because my Dad was one
But Daddy never did come home
When that war was won".

She put his words behind her
and thought no more of it
He repeated them from time to time
determined as he could get

He was almost sixteen now
and couldn't wait to go
She kept him only two more years
Those years were treasured so

At eighteen he went off to war
He wrote her every day
A part of her went with him
That day he went away

She prayed for him each day and night
~~That he'd be coming home to her
She whiled away the lonely hours
And time seemed just a blur.

That dreadful day they told her
that her son had lost his life
her heart almost stopped beating
The news cut like a knife

She sobbed bitter tears for her only child
The pain so hard to bear
She wondered if there would ever be peace
Why there was fighting everywhere.

And when they brought his body home
There were no tears left to cry
They presented her with folded flag
And heard a mournful sigh

When this dreaded day was over And "Taps" began to play
She threw her boy a silent kiss
And slowly walked away

She lives with only memories now
but worth their weight in gold
Remembering~~When he was two, when he was five
when he was ten years old.

Every year she journeys
to The Wall to touch his name
She feels him reaching out to her
She knows he feels her pain

He did what he felt he had to do
Gave his all to keep us free
One more name upon The Wall
of those who died so needlessly.
