Yesterday my friend was here with me
and things just seemed so boring
We'd played and played with everything
and decided to go exploring

We went up to the attic
~the stairs were steep and long
but we knew when we were finally there
It was just where we belonged

We found an old, old cedar chest
that Mom had packed away
I didn't know that it was there
till we discovered it~~yesterday

I never knew my Grandma
~long gone before I was born
My Mom would tell me stories
of the pretty clothes she'd worn

She had a frilly dress of white
that Mom had packed away
It was the dress I chose
to play "dress up" in~~yesterday

My friend put on a dress of red
and a pretty hat with flowers
We had so much fun with Grandma's clothes
we stayed in the attic for hours

I could see my Grandma dancing
and her pretty face just glowing
wearing that dress of fiery red
with the bottom ruffles flowing

Grandma had a locket
on a pretty chain of gold
~My friend put on this locket
and the story Mom had told
was that it was given to her
by my Grandpa years ago
when he told her that he loved her
and then became her beau

How beautiful Mom had said she looked
in this white dress that I wore
with pink ribbons in her long, dark hair
and eyes the boys would die for

I felt that someone was looking at me
and was afraid as I could be
~then I saw Grandma in the mirror
smiling back at me

The long dark hair was gray now
and she wore it in a bun
but those eyes were still so pretty
as when Grandpa's heart she'd won

She had on a simple dress of blue
and I wondered now if she
was remembering when she'd worn this dress
because she just beamed at me

She stepped right from that mirror
and took my arm in hers
She danced and laughed and twirled me so fast
Everything was just a blur

And then she faded from my sight
and somehow I felt sad
because this one time with my Grandma
was the only time I'd had

I miss you more now, Grandma
but I'll keep the memory
of when I wore your dress of white
and you smiled back at me.

I'll come back to this attic every day
and I'll spend more time with you
Because I have met and had such fun
With the Grandma I never knew.

When Mom tells me stories now
I just bet I'll see
those eyes of blue are laughing
and winking right at me.

I never dreamed I'd ever meet you
in this most unusual way
and I won't forget the time
I spent with you, Grandma~~yesterday.
